Eagles Fall to Crimson - Finish 1st Semester with 1-3 Mark

The Boston College Eagles finished the first semester dual meets by hosting cross-town rival Harvard University. Both schools had traveled to an Invitational this past week end and showed the effects of fatigue. Harvard jumped to a lead taking the 400 medley relay despite a solid effort by Brianne Sullivan, Alexis Kostopoulos, Lauren Schwartz and Nina Suryoutomo. Nicole Duffy managed 2nd place in the 200 freestyle with a good time of 1:56.87. Brianne Sullivan picked up BC's first win with a 1:00.66 in the 100 backstroke. They visiting Crimson then 1-2'd BC in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 fly before Nina Suryoutomo took the 50 freestyle with a 24.91. Kristen Gray closed out the first half of the meet with a win off the one meter board with her 252.60 points. The Eagles trailed 75-56 but the rest of the individual events were dominated by Harvard. The Eagles managed only one win in the next six events. That was frosh Melissa Pierce winning the 200 backstroke with a 2:10.15. BC turned in a number of decent swims but they were all for the second place points. They were by Nina Suryoutomo (100 freestyle), Alexis Kostopoulos (200 breaststroke), Nicole Duffy (500 freestyle) and Lauren Schwartz (100 butterfly). Kristen Gray then added another second for BC - off the three meter board. Harvard added a 1-2-3 sweep in the seldomn swum 100 individual medley before BC closed out the meet by taking the 200 freestyle relay. Sophomore Alexis Kostopoulos joined up with three freshmen (Nicole Duffy, Caitlin Klick and Nina Suryoutomo) for a 1:40.66 and the win. The final score was Harvard 167 and BC 114 and the Eagles are left with a 1-3 record for the first semester. We had a tough group of opponents so the record is not that disappointing. We have six more dual meets and they are all winnable but we need to swim well. We are a very talented team but right now that word "potential" hangs over our heads. We need to show that we can be ready to swim every meet and to put together both individual events and relays to maximize the results.
